In recent years I've taught myself to focus on one thing, and this way I've actually been finishing novels instead of writing a dozen opening chapters/parts. So I know your multi-WIP pain.
Ooh, CS Friedman. I read her scifi novel This Alien Shore years ago, and it's one of my favourite scifi novels. I've the first Coldfire novel on my to-read pile.
